Wood Fence

Wood fences are the most commonly used fence on most residences, and we’ve found that Western red cedar is the best choice of wood for a wood fence in Denver. With a properly installed wood fence and proper maintenance, wood fences will last for years even in our wild weather swings in Denver and give you years of worry free service. Although we recommend a Western Red Cedar fence, we’ll give you information about all the different types of wood fences so you will be able to make an informed decision.

Facts About Wood Fences

  • Of all the fence types, a wood fence will give you the most privacy.   shadow-box-fence-pattern
  • Wood fences will stand up well to the strong winds we experience in Denver. They also act as wind screen for your yard.
  • Wood privacy fences are normally 6 feet tall and come in many beautiful patterns. The shadow box pattern (pictured at right) is the most installed wood fence in Denver.
  • Split Rail Fences are popular and usually used on farms and made of cedar wood. There are different styles of split rail fences available like square, round or split rails with decorative post caps that are beautiful as well as functional.
  • Wood fence posts will last much longer and are extremely durable if they’re set in concrete; we’ll ask your building department where you live for their standards for fence posts, but we always recommend fence post set in concrete.
  • Wood fences should be installed approximately 4 inches inside your property line, or installed in the same place as the old fence whenever you’re replacing an old fence.

 Wood Fence Repair

Repair is necessary from time to time and we can match any wood or hardware on your homes wood fence from gate post to gate hardware. Wood fences are easily repaired and they don’t need to be replaced just because there are sections of fence, or loose hardware on the fence that needs to be replaced.wood-fence-small

  • Fence rail repair. Fence rails can usually be repaired using a 2×4 stud or galvanized steel T braces; we’ll apply a good wood preservative to all areas of the wood fence when we’re repairing it to prevent further damage to the fence from rotting.
  • Fence Post repair. Some of your fence post will begin to wobble as time goes by, if the fence post is rotting or broken, we’ll repair it with 2×4 wood splints attached to each side of the post that go below the frost line, and are at least a foot above the ground on each side. We then drill holes in at least two places on the splints and use galvanized bolts and pressure treated 2×4’s or a good grade of cedar. When fence post are broken at the ground level we’ll replace the entire fence post which involves digging a new post hole, and placing a new wood post in concrete to make sure you have a strong repair that will last for years.
  • Fence Gate repair. If the gates on your wood fence won’tclose or are becoming hard to close, we’ll check the hinges to make sure they’re not bent; if they are, we’ll replace the wood fence hinge with a larger hinge. If the problem is loose screws we’ll fill the old holes with wood dowels and glue, and then re-drill where the old holes used to be and use larger galvanized screws that will hold the gate in place.
  • Replace wood fence sections. Replacing sections of wood fence is usually the easiest way to fix a broken or damaged section of your wood fence, or we’ll repair small breaks in wood fence panels with a new wood panel that will match your existing fence.

Life Expectancy of Fences

We are constantly asked about the life expectancy of the different types of fences so here is rule of thumb for each of the fence types.

  • Wood fences will give you up to 20 years of service, if you maintain them well and if you seal the wood on the fence every year. We seal wood fences so call us for a free quote for wood fence maintenance.
  • Chain link fences can easily last 30 years with very little maintenance.
  • Vinyl fences will last almost forever with very little maintenance which makes vinyl fence a very smart choice if it fits in with your landscaping.
  • Aluminum fences will also last for a long time and by that we mean at least 30 to 40 years with the proper maintenance which is as easy as washing the fence once a year.
