Alpine Companies specialized limited access equipment shown above, is perfect for all interior and exterior drilling. When you need concrete foundation repair or deep soil injection micropile stabilization, this mini drilling machine does it all, without disrupting your exterior landscaping. This drilling machine also works perfect for numerous small caisson applications such as, light poles, mailboxes, landmarks, residential and commercial signs, solar gardens, soil anchors and pretty much anything else you can think of using micropile caissons for.

The new demand for micropiles have grown significantly since their birth in Italy during the 1950’s. Micropiles have mainly been used in new construction applications for the last 60 years. Alpine Companies now uses them for new design builds, as well as to shore up sinking structures, footings and foundation repair conditions. Through new technology, engineering and Alpine Companies’ hard working design team, we will be introducing a new hybrid micropile process.

Generically, piles have been placed into two general types – displacement piles and replacement piles. Displacement piles are members that are driven or vibrated into the ground, thereby displacing the surrounding soil laterally during installation. Replacement piles are placed or constructed within a previously drilled borehole, thus replacing the excavated ground. A micropile is a small-diameter (typically less than 12 inches), drilled and grouted replacement pile that typically is reinforced. A micro pile is constructed by drilling a borehole, placing reinforcement, and grouting the hole. Micropiles can withstand axial and/or lateral loads, and may be considered a substitute for conventional piles or as one component in a composite soil/pile mass, depending upon the design concept engineered.

The best characteristic of micropiles is that they are installed by methods that cause minimal disturbance to adjacent soils and structures. Alpine Companies can install micro piles in limited access conditions and in all soil types year round. Micro piles can be installed at any angle below the horizontal using the same type of equipment used for ground anchor and grouting projects. Since the installation procedure causes minimal vibration and noise, and can be used in conditions of low headroom, micro piles often are used to underpin existing structures. Alpine Companies uses specialized drilling equipment to install the micropiles from within existing parking garages, commercial buildings, retail stores and residential basement structures.

Alpine Companies state-of-the-art micropile design, by comparison, relies on high-capacity steel elements to resist most or all of the applied load. The steel reinforcements Alpine Companies uses in their micropiles have been reported to occupy as much as one-half of the hole volume. Alpine Companies’ special drilling and grouting methods used in the micropile installation allow for high grout/ground bond values along the grout and ground interface. The grout transfers the load through friction from the reinforcement to the ground in the micro pile bond zone in a manner similar to that of ground anchors. The grout/ground bond strength achieved is influenced primarily by the ground type and grouting method used, i.e., pressure grouting or gravity feed.

Alpine Companies will continue to improve the evolution of the micropile, for foundation repairs and new installations.
